I believe that the purpose of assessment is to provide students with feedback on their knowledge and understanding of particular subjects areas within an educational setting. In my experience as a student, I can recall being assessed on topics like knowledge, understanding, communication and application. We assess students so to see how they comprehend these subjects. For students, it gives them the opportunity to see how well they are doing. It can help them with visualize certain strengths and weaknesses that one may have and this information is meant to be used as a motivational factor for students to always strive for success. In elementary school, I learned that no matter how confident you may be in a particular subject area, there is always room for growth and development and I believe that assessment is crucial for students success, as long as they have proper feedback from their teachers and are provided with supports if they are not doing well in specific areas.

Growing Success is a document that aspires to uphold high
standards for all grade levels in notations schools. Based on the policies and
practices with in the document, the main goal of the Growing Success document
is to improve student learning and help improve all of the academic and
educational experiences for students, parents, and teachers in elementary and
secondary schools across the province.
While having the opportunity to work closely with the
Growing Success document in teachers college, I have noticed many of the
similarities and differences in the policies and practices described in Growing
Success (2010), and in growing success- The Kindergarten Addendum (2016). Both documents are similar in the sense that
they have the same fundamental principles outlined but the context of the
Kindergarten Addendum is much shorter. For learning skills and work habits, the
Kindergarten Addendum only discusses developing “Self-Regulation”, whereas, the
grades 1-12 document identifies 6 learning skills and work habits and provides
examples of sample behaviours to elaborate the importance of these features. One
thing that definitely stood out is that the Kindergarten document does not have
an achievement chat for students. Kindergarten’s evaluation is also broad with
no set criteria, while grade 1-12 identifies more about assessment through
evaluation, and structures how to report grade based on evidence and
professional judgment.
Reports students achievement for kindergarten takes place in
3 reporting periods, while grades 1-12 is structured with report card
requirements such as OSR’s and OST’s that report on learning skills and
achievement expectations. For special
educations needs, the Kindergarten Addendum uses 3 temples that are used to
give information about learning, which the grade 1-12 documents is more
detailed in description of what modifications and expectations are for the
students and information is given on how teachers can incorporate information,
assessment, and other program adjustments.
I think that the growing success documents are very
beneficial resources that are essential for us to grow and develop as teachers.
These documents are also there to help improve our student’s education, so that
we maintain a high standard of learning in our classrooms.

As teachers, I think there are many different ways to assess
our students but ultimately, no matter what type of assessment we are giving
our students, it is important to provide them with feedback, so that they know
their levels of achievement according to the curriculum and where they can
improve.
